Who we are

At St Joe Pilates we are dedicated to helping people of all ages and fitness levels change their lives and health in a positive way. I am a third generation classical Pilates instructor and utilize equipment based on Joseph Pilates’ original designs.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLASSICAL AND CONTEMPORARY PILATES?

Joseph Pilates did not trademark his work. When he died the courts determined that Pilates was a generic term. Classical Pilates stays true to what Joseph Pilates taught, sticking to what has been passed on through his photos, videos, students, and teachers. Classical Pilates holds the integrity of the system and order he used focusing on the powerhouse to build strength, body symmetry, flexibility and the use of the mind to control the body. Contemporary Pilates is an interpretation of his exercise system. .

WHY IS CLASSICAL IMPORTANT?

  • To get the benefits of Pilates, you need to actually be doing Pilates. Many studios today use equipment like TRX, barre, and bosu, which are beneficial to movement, but are not  what Joseph Pilates taught.

  • Mat and reformer have an exercise order. Joseph Pilates had an order to mat and reformer in order to properly warm up the body to prepare it for the next exercise.

  • Classical Pilates utilizes all the apparatus based upon what the teacher sees your body needs. The various apparatus are designed to lengthen, lift, open, strengthen, and stretch the body so you can better perform the mat and reformer work as well as your everyday activities.
