Who we are

At St Joe Pilates we are dedicated to helping people of all ages and fitness levels change their lives and health in a positive way. I am a third generation classical Pilates instructor and utilize equipment based on Joseph Pilates’ original designs.

WHAT IS CLASSICAL PILATES?

Joseph Pilates' method was revolutionary and holistic, emphasizing the six principles (Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Breath, and Flow) in a precise way. His original system addresses strength, flexibility, alignment, mobility, and mind-body integration extremely well when taught correctly.

WHY IS TEACHER CERTIFICATION IMPORTANT?

Classical programs are rigorous, typically requiring 600+ hours of apprenticeship — including observation, personal practice, student teaching, and assisting. This immersive approach creates highly skilled instructors who deeply embody the work. Apprentices learn not just "what" exercises but the “why” behind each movement, transition, and progression. This foundation makes it easier to intelligently modify or advance exercises when needed because instructors understand the original intent.

Why We Teach the Full Classical Pilates System?

At our boutique Classical Pilates studio, we do not offer “Reformer-only” Pilates because the Reformer is only one part of a much larger, integrated method.

Joseph Pilates created a complete system of movement designed to develop the body uniformly. The Mat builds the foundation. The Cadillac and Tower support precision, control, and spinal articulation. The Chairs build strength, stability, and power. The Barrels help open, lengthen, and restore the body in ways no single apparatus can accomplish alone. The Reformer then becomes one powerful part of that full-body system.

When Pilates is limited to the Reformer alone, clients miss the depth, progression, and purpose of the original method. Classical Pilates is designed to strengthen the smaller supporting muscles as well as the larger muscle groups, helping the body move with greater balance, control, and efficiency.

Expert Instruction. Rigorous Certification. Thoughtful Coaching.

Mary Gail brings extensive training, personal dedication, and a deep respect for the Classical Pilates method to every session.

A third-generation, comprehensively trained Classical Pilates instructor, Mary Gail is certified through Alycea Ungaro’s Real Pilates Teacher Training Program in the lineage of Romana Kryzanowska, who trained directly with Joseph Pilates. Her education includes more than 600 hours of hands-on training and apprenticeship, giving her a strong foundation in the full Classical Pilates system.

After beginning her Pilates journey in 2017 in Ridgway, Colorado, with Erica Young, Mary Gail felt called to share the method more deeply. In 2024, she left the corporate world to pursue Pilates full time, bringing focus, care, and purpose to helping clients experience the strength, discipline, and lasting benefits of authentic Classical Pilates.
